When we read Gen12:1, we think that was first time God spoke to Abraham. The first call was when he was in Ur of Chaldean before Genesis 11:31-32. When we read that it looks like God told Terah to leave Ur of Chaldean but actually we found out in cts7:2 and Genesis15:7 that God spoke to Abraham.
Abraham left Ur of Chaldean with his father and they came to Haran where his father died. Obviously, his family members may have decided to stay at Haran after their father’s death but then God spoke to Abraham the second time. It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God -Lk4:4. There must be a word from the Lord that we are following. Faith begins when you hear the word of the Lord. We cannot follow Jesus if we don’t hear his voice. I believe going through the points below will help us learn from the story of Abraham
- Take a step of faith and come out from your comfort zone – your family and friends and walk with God. Abraham travelled 600 miles from Ur to Haran. He was settled at Haran (Gen12:5) after his father’s death , then God spoke to him to move to the final destination which is Canaan land (about 400 miles away). Our life is in phases , we must learn to walk with God so we can enter into all the things he has planned for us.
- God may not show you everything about the journey – The destination was not clear at the beginning but God told him the end will be great. Don’t worry about what is on the offer now (or maybe there is even no offer – no job or business opportunity) , there is something greater you cannot see that God has reserved for you. Just obey him and go as instructed! When the Lord told me to leave my job and move to a different city, i did not have a job . However , when I followed his word I got a job in the new city. Sometimes, God will open a door for you so you can serve him in another location.
- You don’t need to start with great substance – Abraham did not come out of Haran with great substance, no prospect of a job or business where God said he will show him. He only followed the word. All you need is a word from the Lord. His word will build you up and give you an inheritance amongst the Saint -Acts 20:32
- Go for your advantage from where you are now. God said, Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you- 2 Cor 6:17 KJV
Now [in Haran] the Lord said to Abram, Go for yourself [for your own advantage] away from your country, from your relatives and your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you [with abundant increase of favors] and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing [dispensing good to others] – Genesis 12 (AMPC)
