Why did Sara call Abraham lord, was he a saint?

January 13, 2020

When you obey God, he will fight for you and make sure you get what belongs to you. Prayer and giving will never take the place of obedience!

1 Peter 3:6 It was thus that Sarah obeyed Abraham [following his guidance and acknowledging his headship over her by] calling him lord (master, leader, authority). And you are now her true daughters if you do right and let nothing terrify you [not giving way to hysterical fears or letting anxieties unnerve you]

It is not ok to read the bible without the context. It will not help you understand spiritual truth. The bible is a progressive revelation. There is an important lesson for us to learn from the obedience of Sara. It is easy to accept correction (to some it is difficult) when we are wrong but when someone accuse us for doing the right thing it is very difficult to hold our peace.  It is easy to submit to a loving and caring husband. Let’s find out how good Abraham was – I am not casting stone! I just want us to know that when the Lord asked us to do something – forgive and submit, it is not about the other person. I want us to check out some things about Abraham;

He got married to Sarah and told her he will be going to a place God had not shown him. Sisters, how many of you will marry a man without a vision? To make matter worse he left with the whole family, his father and Lot and they all came to Haran (about 600miles from Ur of the Chaldees). In the real sense of it there was no privacy for Sarah. Other family members probably got more priority over her. They got to Haran, and his father in-law died, and her husband said God told me to move again to Canaan land – another 250 miles away. Abraham was 75 and she was 65 years and they had no children and house of their own. All these years they were living in tents. Sister , you need the grace of God to live with a man living in a rented house at the age of 75 and still hold your peace.

So, they got to Egypt and Abraham told his wife “Please tell them that you are my sister so that things will go well for me for your sake, and my life will be spared because of you” – Genesis 12: (AMP). Abraham was willing to sacrifice his wife to stay alive! The question is why any wife would call a husband who does this Lord! Abraham did this twice -Gen20:2

Again, this loving and loyal woman (or do you say she was stupid) gave her maid to her husband so they could both have a child through her. Many of us today blamed her for that but we didn’t understand her situation then. The most annoying thing to me was that Abraham struggled to send the maid away because she had a child for him. Sarah lived with the torment from Haggai and her son for more than 13 years and she still called Abraham lord. I wish the bible is not true!  At this point I salute women whose maid has taken their place because they had no children. Your story will change within a year of reading this story!

With all this experience, Sarah still called Abraham Lord. How terrible is your husband and you are struggling to submit to him? Has he done worse than Abraham! How wicked is the boss you are struggling to obey? How rude are the parents you can’t obey?  Ham was cursed and he became the servant of Shem because he did not cover the nakedness of Noah when he got drunk. It is not right for Noah to get drunk but there is a serious consequence for disobeying your parent- this even happened before the law was given!

Now Abraham and Sarah were very old, and Sarah at 90 years was long since passed the time when she could have a baby, but the Lord remembered her loyalty to her husband. I believe Haggai would have assumed the role of the second wife, After all she had the only son for Abraham, but God has another plan.  I don’t know what you have given up on, but the Lord will visit you in the next one year and your story will change.

Finally, she had a son, but the maid had the first son so the heir apparent is not going to be Isaac. Hmm, this must have been very difficult for Sarah to take in but God stepped in again to protect this woman of faith and honour. God said to Abraham “Do not let it distress you because of Ishmael and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her and do what she asks, for your descendants will be named through Isaac” – Gen21:13. Finally God wiped her tears away and gave her victory. This will be your story in Jesus name.

Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion. Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honoured him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honour of God the Father -Phil4:5-11
